    Malcolm and Angus are the reasons I play guitar and a huge influence on my electric playing. It took me a few years, however, to realise how important Mal was - not "just" the rhythm guitarist. Angus is on record as saying that Malcolm was completely capable of playing good solos (but didn't especially want to) and that, in the early days, he (Angus) would play his solos to Mal, for approval before recording. He could do it all. A little piece of me dies every time I hear someone try to cover AC/DC, with a sloppy right hand and WAY too much gain. Mal and Phil Rudd make the atomic clock look sloppy! 😀

    Agreed! I especially note the utter lack of a solo in Dire Straits' 'Wild West End', all the while showing true mastery by enhancement of the entire song via unique 'melody riffs'.     We've just starting playing gigs and it dawned on me that when playing live it is the bass/rhythm section that gets people moving, but when I'm listening to music at home I'll be listening to the guitar solos more and not so concerned about the bass line etc. Each has it's place but I found it interesting to realise this difference.

    As a former drummer and AC/DC fan, I must say that most of the guitarists I have played with really suck at rythm. Let them play alone for a while, and they are completely lost. Most of them need a drummer or a bassplayer to keep rythm. Especially if they are playing a solo. I usually "judge" a guitarist by if they know rythm. Practise that, all future guitarists. Promise, you will impress.

    Could you look into Harry Sacksioni, a Dutch guitarist, who often did famous songs, as full guitar songs. In which he plays bass, rythm and melody, at the same time. And it keeps the feeling of groove, although it is just one guy on stage.

    I'm glad you pointed this out, because rhythm playing really is (or should be) about 90% of the job of an electric guitarist in almost any band. any style - riffs count as rhythm too if they're repeated. I've even said this on stage when someone made a (nice) comment about my guitar soloing, that's how much I believe it. The rhythm in general is what makes people dance, the vocals make people sing along, so when you realise this, right away you might also realise that the vocalist, bassist and drummer are more important to the groove than you are, and can act accordingly. I personally get more enjoyment out of a funky rhythm part, say taking a simple four chord progression like _Get Lucky_ and seeing what you can find in and around the regular Bm/D/F#m7/E progression in terms of keeping that rhythm guitar part interesting for 10 minutes. It's a lot better of an exercise for a guitarist than aimless meaningless noodling, and when you take it live a *LOT* more likely to make people dance.

    MY is every bit as important to the AC/DC legend as his brother. He was a big part of the groove, no question. His bright, cleaner and percussive tone accentuated that. Yes, Phil Rudd, Cliff Williams, Bon and Brian are vital, too. Sum of the parts… PR’s energetic, yet behind the beat feel laid a killer foundation to the band.

    Just as important as what you're playing is what you DON'T play. Malcolm Young played with a lot of air, giving the steady groove of the drums and bass the ability to send groove fans into a frenzy. His riffs sound very easy to play - and note by note they are - but his use of air (less distortion, short notes and syncopated rythms) make them hard to master, even for seasoned guitar players. Malcolm Young didn't mess around with ad hoc improvisations and unnecessary fills. He was the rhythm guitar player, and he nearly perfected that role.

    I hope guitar moves back to focusing on rhythm playing. Solos are overrated. Ella Feingold is someone that is really showing how important rhythm is. She nails it and it's way harder than shredding in my opinion.

    It took me years to get it right but I finally got ok at playing Malcolms parts once I realised - It isn't about strumming/playing the chords. Its about the gaps between the strums. I call it playing the silence.

    My buddy had a signed guitar and a bunch of AC/DC memorabilia from his dad when I was in high school. He had every album, and I got the DVD set "Family Jewels." He always tried to imitate Angus, while I learned mostly Malcom. Cannot describe how much I hate his guitar, but LOVE his playing, haha

    I also always loved his tone. I never was the biggest fan of the solos in ACDC. I don't think there needs to be one but if it's good then it can enrich the song a lot. Imagine Painkiller without Glenn's solo midway through the song. So much would be missing. But if it's just bending noted to sound cool just becaude the lead guitarist needs something to do. Blues is different of course it's not so distinct, the "solo" is often throughout the song.

    G'day Samurai Guitarist, Thanks for a great video. I just wanted to leave you an off-topic note, and recommend that you listen to Stevie Wright's 1974 album called Hard Road. I know that Malcolm Young played lead guitar on the track Evie - Parts I, II & III. It's been a very long time since I've listened to the album, so I can't tell you what else Malcolm played on, but he co-wrote almost half of the album. His older brother, George, is also featured on the album, as well as Harry Vander - the original owner of Malcolm's Gretsch. Stevie, George & Harry were previously members of the group known as The Easybeats. Most of their albums can be found on YT too. Thanks once again for a great video. Keep up the good work Andrew

    In all fairness, upright bass is so infrequently recorded well, but yeah, in general the register isn't conducive to an extended solo . Also realize that a bass player has other jobs and tends not to concentrate on solos, therefore, very often just isn't good at playing them. Stanley Clarke, Christian McBride, Nils Pederson and Scott LaFara have played some great solos. I play both electric and upright and honestly, I wouldn't play a solo on upright beyond four measures.

    I can respect both sides, but I still preferred when music was more of a shared experience. Now everyone is in their own separate music rooms. And not to knock your on the fly tune, but we seem to have countless examples of that. Not bad, but not great. It just seems weird to showcase the impact Stairway had on you (a true masterpiece), and then champion the current way. Again, a nice sounding piece, but would it hit some kid now the same way Stairway did for you? The old way had plenty of problems, but my favorite music all came from that era. It makes me wonder how much focus from the musician is lost trying to spin all the other plates.

    I never really paid attention to effects, guitars, or amplifiers back when I first started. I just knew what music sounded like. AC/DC was one of my biggest inspirations, and the way Malcolm Young played, the way he was able to make a rhythm track that was super catchy, reel you in, and kept you there… it was probably the biggest influence in how I learned how to play. I never had a teacher and I’m completely self taught, but I always considered Malcolm to be my unofficial guitar teacher because of that.
